What is Power?

Power is one of the ways you could motivate people and to get what you wanted. Power is what everybody wants to have. Before and during the industrialization period, riches had the power. How the power is used and its affect to people or to the world depends on who, or what is in charge of power. There are mainly three types of powers; economic, political, and personal. Different powers have caused and made lots of important historic events around the world such as, industrial revolution, imperialism, World War I, World War II, Russian Revolution, etc. and power still plays important role in many peoples lives.

As I mentioned earlier, before and during industrial revolution power stayed with wealth. If you had money, you had power. So there were few rich people. Due to the increasing number of population in England and people needing for more food, people tried to find a way to mass production of goods in the lowest price. That’s how industrial revolution began. During the industrial revolution, wealthier people had more power. The wealthier people had the economic power, because they could buy and get things they wanted, and start businesses to earn even more money. It expanded the gap between the rich and the poor. Capitalism has become an advantage for the riches, which means ones with power have more power, and poor people get poorer. In order for the countries to get more economic power, they needed more resources which made them go to Africa and colonize countries, and gain resources cheaply. That was imperialism of Europe influencing Africa.

Speaking of political power, the two world wars, Russian Revolution, communism and the Cold War are good examples. In World War 1, when Austrian prince got assassinated, Germany joined Austria with war against Serbia. Germany had the largest army which made them think they could win. In those days, if you had an army, you had power as well. In the Russian revolution, Russian revolution started when the Russians thought they were being treated unequally to the royalties and wealthy people. So Lenin brought up an idea of communism where everybody works the same amount and paid the same amount. Cold War is the perfect example of two political powers which are Communism vs. Capitalism. The main countries supporting that idea didn’t go to war head to head, but in small countries mostly in Asia were greatly affected by the ideological influence whether they should be a communism country or capitalist country. Korea was divided into two, where north was supported by communist China and Russia, while South is supported by capitalist US and many other countries. Last example of political power is Genocides. Genocides is when there is a deliberate and systematic destruction of an entire people who belong to one racial, political, cultural, or religious group. And this is related to power because when one group of people is in charge, they tend to agree with other group of people and doesn’t want them. So they try to get rid of them.

World war two is the best example of personal power, because the start of WW2 started with extreme nationalism of the Nazis, mainly Hitler. Hitler started to build armies breaking the rules made in the Treaty of the Versailles. But the other countries didn’t have enough power to say anything to Germany. Hitler wanted to prove his power and started to attack small European countries and eventually the other big countries opposed and tried to stop them from becoming bigger. And other fascist dictators around the world such as Mussolini of Italy, Stalin of Russia, etc. have caused problems like Russian Revolution and WW1.

So any type of powers, especially political and personal can lead to a conflict. So the effect around the power depends on whom or what has power. Power could be used in various good ways to help people, and in the other hand, it could be used and result deadly effects.

Control or Power? - The Giver

in my book, the giver the theme is mostly about control. they dont rally talk about power. the only part they kind of talk about power is when they say the elders only have power to choose peoples jobs, but not really more things than that. so i think the theme of the giver is more of control because they are controlled by the elders and they talk about how they are controlled and what they are being controlled. and if there is a thing that they think that does not benefit the society, then they just remove it from the people. only the reciever has the memories and thoughts. their feelings are controlled by making them take stirring pills. their jobs were chosen by the elders so they are controlled with their jobs too. and one interesting technology was the wwather was controlled as well. lastly there are lots of laws or rules that they cant beark, so they are also controlling their freedom. so people dont have to worry or know about it. soo i think that my book.s theme is more about being controlled.

Globalization

some of the positive effects of the globalization are; people get to know about different cultures and they might like them, and for some companies, they can save lots of money through outsourcing. and by that, people living in developing countries can get more jobs.

the negative effects of the globalization are when people are aware of new cultures, they forget their original culture and change, so their origin is pretty much forgotten. and in the developed countries, because of outsourcing, people lose their jobs. it also widens the gab between the poor and the wealth, and cause riots.

there are parents and a small kid, on a dinner table, and they are asking him about the school day. this cartoon is about a kid and his parents asking about the school day he had, and eve if he didn't tell them, they could just go to the internet and find out. i think the cartoonist's opinion is that the technology today are so advanced, that we could find out about almost everything that's going on so now the kids are limited and can't tell lies to their parent. the evidence is the kid's facial expression. hes doesn't look that happy at all. the ironic part of this cartoon is that even for small kids are using technology nowadays, and most of people think that older people use more technology than the young people. it relates to our study of technology because this cartoon shows that age don't matter for using technologies and in the future even younger kids would be aware how to use any type of technologies.

I disagree with Vonnegut, and i DO think computer can help you become, because there are so many benefiting things using technology such as computer. of course there are bad things too, but they can be controlled. you can learn and find out new things through internet. computer is just a tool that you can use to help yourself with your work and many other things. Life is so much easier and more comfortable with new technology, and if we use it properly and control the bad usages, then i think there wouldn't be any problem with any new technologies. and nowadays almost everything has to do with technology and most of the high-paid jobs, besides sports or stars, involves computer. so i think computer is really helpful to know and how to work on it especially these days, and will become more common.

one of my goals of the last quarter was improving on my writing, but i didn't really improve that much especially with the poem. my second goal was to improve on presentations, but we didn't really do any presentations, and instead we did a digital story, and i think i did well on it. my other goal was to get at least an A- for a research paper, but we didn't do anything.

my new goals for 4th quarter is to get a good grade on my PoP project, by revising it many times.
and i would like to inprove my grades on quizes, by not making any careless mistakes. and lastly i would like to improve on the discussions and the prep works for that by reading/studying more in detail about the topic.

i think "holy war" is an oxymoron because when people say holy, it usually means something great, peaceful or heaven-like things. but war is like violent, killing, deadly action. so they are opposite meaning but it is said together. there are so many conflicts based upon different religions because i think people think that their religious believes are better than the others. and in some of the Muslim countries, they are trained and taught to die for their religion, and say they were told to commit a violent action. even though most of the religions are against killing people, i think people are being to selfish and thinks that their religions should be the best, so i think they are killing people of other religions.

WWIII

I don't think there will be a WWIII, because there are international organizations like the UN, which tries to prevent the war, and even though if there would be a war, it wouldn't be a world war, and just be a war between some countries. because now i think the countries who starts the war will know that there will be less chance of winning and what would happen afterwards, unless its the US or Russia. and nowadays it is harder to colonize any countries because almost all the countries have their army and wouldn't want other country's rule over their own country.

But if there is going to be a war, countries part of UN are likely to go against them or try to stop them. and even though you have lots of armies, it wouldn't matter, because the nation with better weapons have better advantage and chances of winning. and also nowadays the whole world have small or big problems finacially because of the global crises and they wouldn't be wanting to spend their money to the war than helping their own country.

When was the last time that you experienced the “shattering” of an ideal?

i agree with the quote because it is more likely that children will change their minds, because usually as a kid, they don't know as much as adults and other complicated things. and they can be easily persuaded to the other ideas if they think it is benefiting them. and the adults have more experiences so they might be sure of their ideas.

WWII Letter

Dear A.
Honey, i am sorry for not writing you a letter for a while, but it was a very busy week in London. German air forces were bombing the city, and the people are in a terrible horror write now here. i hope you are safe in Manchester. lots of evacuations for little children, due to Nazi bombings, not only London, the attacks have been in Birmingham and Portsmouth too. it is very terrifying in home fronts in major cities being attacked. the German blitz are devastating and over 43,000 are dead and 1.4 million people are homeless.

the Nazi attacks are deadly and humiliating. they also drop bombs with poison gas, so we got an order to wear gas masks for our safety. there are also rationing, which makes people get equal amount of shares of resources during the war. but we do have hopes of winning the war, thanks to the 'home guards'. it was group of people who failed military tests, armed, fighting for Britain. there are about 250,000 of them so far, thanks to Tom Wintringham who created Home Guards.

But if something bad happens and if we have to follow Zero Option (plan of moving the government out of London when its taken and when they need some place else), i still love you and i miss you very much and want to be back at home and be with you. i will write again soon.

Directions

AF movie critique

overall i thought movie was quite interesting in a sense that there were lots of small parts that they were different, for example, old major dies right after he gives the speech to the other animals. also in the movie, they never mentioned about Molie. also in a book, Snowball didn't get killed, but in a movie, he got chased and got killed by dogs. the story went really fast in the movie. another big part shown in the movie, but never happened in the book was, in the end, the animals takes over and attacks Napoleon and the other pigs.

i think if to compare with the characters in the Animal farm, then i would be most similar with Benjamin. first, because Benjamin stays out when he thinks its not a good idea, and i sometimes also act like that. For example, if we're playing a game and if i know that we are going to lose, then i just quit or don't play at all. Secondly, because if pretty much know whats going on in school. Thirdly, I'm i never take risk that i know I'm going to get in trouble. Lastly, I'm smart and get good grades! So overall I am Benjamin in Animal Farm.

Injustice is when somethings unfair
Self-determination is when they get to choose their wanted LIFE.

In the book, Animal Farm, the animals are not satisfied with how they are treated to how they work so hard and sacrifice to farmer Jones.and one of the pigs, Old Major thought it was injustice and told the other animals that they should get free from farmer Jones. in page 5, he gives a speech and explains to other animals that it was not enough what they get for their work, and he was very against farmer Jones.

Military in future

Military is necesaary for korean men are necessary to serve when you graduate between 18-26 years old. but i don't really think its going to be bad, because since i can speak english fluently, if i take SAT or TOEFL and i pass, then i could be in KATUSA, becuase it is much better condition then normal korean army, and you get paid more. and you do get free time at around 7, so only thing is hard training. but if i do good, then everythings fine. If i go to normal korean army, then it would be a little harder, but overall im not to worried about serving in the millitary.

the main visual is there are different countries with treaties with different countries, except for one country that doesn't have any alliances with. and i think it means that some countries are stronger than the others. this cartoon is about relationship between different countries. and i think the opinion of the author is, strong countries make alliances with themselves, and few countries are left out, and you can never tell before the war, because some countries can betray and attack. the evidence could be, in this picture germany, and italy are allies with other countries but world war 1 happened because of germany and other countries forming axis and attacking other weak European countries. so all the alliances can't be trusted. it relates to the great powers game, because most of the countries had alliances with pretty much most of the other countries, but as the time passed on, some countries declared war against each other. some countries had to join wars to help one of the sides of the war. similar to world war, germany first attacked neighboring country which drew more countries into the battle.

1. I was italy, and first i thought it would be hard to win the game since our country wasn't that strong. countries with more buying points and more armies had advantage in this game because if they start with more buying powers, they can buy more things at a time and they can get bigger easily. our empire was weaker than most of the other countries in the beginning.
2. for the long run it is more important to buy industries, because it will increase your buying points and later you can get alot of armies at once when you need it.
3. things that we've done well is since we only had 2 buying powers, in the beginning of the game we bought as much as industries we could and later when we felt we needed armies to protect ourselves, we bought armies. i don't really think of anything that we could have done it differently because we already did great.
4. we alliances with all the countries but i couldn't really trust some of the countries. but countries like france, and U.S, we could trust them because i think they trusted us too. our empire didn't get any help because we never got attacked, but we did help other countries to protect them.
5. powerful nations, or group can easily take over small nations or groups. most of the conflicts begin to get profits for themselves. conflicts are merciless.

i did well with reading for AR, and i got good grade on it, also i think i've improved only a little with my descriptive pieces so i still would like to work on it this quarter. and for socratic seminar cant really tell whether i've improved because we didn't do one.

my new goals for quarter 3 are still improving with n0t only descriptive pieces, but the whole writing section and getting a higher grade. and also when we have to do presentations i would like to work on it too to get better grades, by spending more time with it and revising it over. and finally i will work on research papers and get atleast a A-.

Nowadays South Africa is the strongest economy in that region and they have stable government. The challenges of South Africa is ending of apartheid problems, separating different races. Related to the a[artheid problems, many foreign countries refused to invest money in South Africa, and other sport organizations didn't include South Africans in the competition. South Africa has more resources and industry than other countries in the region, and that helped bringing opportunities of strong economy.
Small inclave countries like Lesotho and Swaziland has fewer resources and land, resulting as a poor country. Namibia has just gained its independence in 1990 from South Africa, but most of its land is desert, making them not suitable for mass products from agriculture, so they are a poor country. Botswana is on of Africa's most success countries of the world's highest economic growth since 1960s. zumbabwe is a poor country due to high inflation. they do have resources, but it doesn't affect country's wealth that much. Mozambique is one of the world's poorest counties because of civil wars happening often. Madagascar is working to improve country's struggling economy, and their incomes are mostly exports of coffee and other natural resources. Madagascar is also popular with tourists visiting to see unique plants and animals. So as a result, South Africa and Botswana are two most successful countries in the region, and the factors of wealth are they have big lands, and plenty resources. And other countries are very poor mostly due to civil wars.

The main visuals in this cartoon are map of africa in black, and a foot step, and on that foot print, there is a desert like, dry land surface. i think this cartoon is about European countries taking control over africa, and where they have been, the land is dried. and in real life, i think after Europeans have been to Africa, they have made it worse. and i don't think that the authors thoughts are positive, because there were things that the Europeans brought to africa to help, but in the drawing, it is kind of a negative sign. because the foot print is i think the Europeans' and it dried off the land. and i think it is persuasive because it is simple, and doesn't have anything else which possibly could distract the main point the author is trying to say.

Before European countries came to take over Africa, there were many other African tribes. The most well known tribe in southern Africa during 1400s would be the Shona. The Shona is best known for Great Zimbabwe, their stone-walled towns. They were founded in the late 1000s and it was a trading center. Later, their gold mines developed and became a large trade center and traded widely over the world. The evidence is there were chinese pircelain and other artifacts from Asia. but they only lasted till 1500s due to the decline of gold trade. Then the europeans came to Southern africa The Dutch, on the way to Asia, they had to go around the tip of South Africa, so they settled down and set up a trade station near the Cape of Good Hope. Afrikaners, who were Dutch, French, and German, settled in south Africa until the Great Britain took over the area of the cape. there was another tribe in near South Africa called the Zulu. They were strong, powerful tribe who conquered surrounding African people, and creating their empire. But the British, after series of battles defeated the Zulu. and in the early 1900s the government of South Africa, which was dominated by the Afrikaners were increasingly racist against the blacks. to defend their rights, the africans formed a ANC ( African national congress) and there was a policy which divided different races into : whites, blacks Coloureds, and Asian. So overall, the history of Southern part of africa is mainly different tribes and european countries taking over each other and during the early 1900s, there were problems related to racism.

2. the main reason i think was the resources, because European countries wanted resources and raw materials, and also the advantage against other countries, like Suez Canal, and Cape Town, they could control other countries' shippings.

They just made a new currency note of Z$1 million note, due to the affect of hyperinflation. Zimbabwe has the highest rate of inflation which is 230 million percent. and it is hard for people to buy things, because everyday the value of Zimbabwe dollars go down, so the prize of the products go up everyday. It is going to affect Zimbabwe economically.

Physical Geography of Southern Africa is mainly a large plateau, deserts, shrubs, rivers and a mountain range in the eastern part called Drakensberg. there are quiet a few of rivers in southern Africa. One of them is Okavango river which flows from Angola to a basin in Botswana and never touches the ocean. The rivers in southern Africa are home of many wild animals like crocodiles, zebras, and hippos. also there are tropical forests too in southern Africa. For exmaple in a large island called Madagascar, mostly made up of forests contain about 50 spcies of lemurs, apes etc. and also southern Africa has lots of minerals and other natural resources. South Africa supplies most of the world's gold. and also other countries like Botswana, Namibia and South Africa is productive diamond mines. The climaste varies from west region and the east region, the east is wet due to evaporation brought from the indian ocean and since the mountain ranges are so high, the west regoin of southern africa is dry, resulting having deserts. So overall Southern Africa has valuable minerals, home of wild animals, plateaus, deserts, and rivers. And it is a good place to visit and see the real nature and animals.

Yes i think it is OK to trust the book To Be a Slave, because the author's ancestors were slaves, and he might know well what it is to be a slave and how they became slaves. Also, the book is very realistic and it is possible that similar things happened in the book. He also wrote this book using other reliable sources related to the slaves. And also by looking at his academic background, he is a professor in a famous university in U.S, teaching african studies.

Barbara Hogan , new health minister of South Africa broke from a decade of discredited government policies on AIDS. On monday, two weeks after she became health minister, she pronounced that HIV and AIDS are related, and so will scale up mother-to-child prevention programs. and she also said in last 10 years government policies had failed, and needs to improve on anti-AIDS medicines. Because south Africa has the highest rate of HIV and AIDS.

This news story is worthy because it is about to change what has happened last 10 years. and it is going to affect alot of people, and it maybe affect countries in that region, since alot of other african countries have similar problems with AIDS and HIVs.

Violence leads to more violence

In the book Julius Caesar, there was a similar situation of violence lead to more violence.
When Brutus and other conspirators killed Caesar, Antony, and Octavius fought against them. Also all the citizens, after the speech of Antony, got upset and started to go against Brutus and Cassius. So the first violence was when the conspirator stabbed Caesar, and it lead to a bigger violence which resulted as a war between the conspirators and Antony and Octavius. nowadays i think it is more less, because you can't really go to war that easily. but one of the examples will be when there are normal citizens uprising or protesting against the government, then the government will try to stop by adding more army or police support to the city, and there would be a bigger and more violence between people and the government.

The Brutus Dilemma

If I was Brutus, and had to choose between my country and my friends, then i would choose my friend because when you face a problem, good friends help you, and if Brutus stays loyal to Caesar, then Caesar will also appreciate that loyalty and be better thoughts about Brutus. and Brutus is not even sure that Caesar will become a mean dictator, it might be a lie. and even though Caesar turns mean, Brutus can assist him to be good ruler again. and if Brutus kills Caesar, people who liked Caesar will start hating Brutus. And if Brutus stays loyal, he would be respected by many people, and also from Caesar, and Caesar won't think Brutus would do any harm to him, so they would be loyal to each other.

Qualities to be a good leader, that person should accept other people and not ignoring them just because they don't like that person. instead you should try to be more friendly. also should have confidence in trying new things and lead other people. the leader in group of people i hang out with is whether me or declan, because we always lead our friends to other places. they also have jokes, and new ideas for the group.

most of omperial starters were all European countries where they were pretty much settle after industrial revolution. they all wanted colonies for resources and labors. their methods were all military, some were economically. some countries left negative changes like starvations and poverty, but the other changes they made were introducing new technologies and machines. for example Britain power lines to India, and African countries got machines and other new technologies. most different region was South East Asia, they didn't really influence culturally. the main reason countries colonize other countries were to earn land, labor, and raw resources.

i thought i have improved on socratic seminar, but i didn't get a good grade, so i didn't really improve much on that. my second goal for this quarter was improving on vocab quizzes. and i think i have improved on the tests and quizzes and got a good grade. so i think i have improved on one of my goals.

my goals for the second quarter is still improving in socratic seminar, because i still want to get a good grade on it. my other goal is writing a quality descriptive piece. my last goal for second quarter is getting enough points on AR quizzes.

a big guy (capitalism, owner) is holding a little guy (labor), and lots of coins are dropping to bags which are profits from child labor. this cartoon is about capitalism and i think the cartoonist is trying to say while labors including children make money, but most of them for the owners, and they have almost nothing left for themselves. so it is not a really good idea, thinking of labors. the evidence of these in the cartoon is owner is big and is wearing good clothes with many bags of profits, and a labor is small and wearing not such good clothes. maybe the cartoonist could have drew this in color except for the labor, so that people can clearly see that labor is standing out in a sad way, and also i think it would show the poverty of the labors.

goals reflection

one of my goals for this class was improving in socratic seminar, but we only did few seminars this quater so i dont think i improved as much as i expected.
the other goal was to improve my vocab quiz grades. i score pretty good on the second vocab quiz, but on the third one i got a horrible grade. so i didn't really improve as much.

first i thought "Buy low and sell high" helped me pretty much so i bought silver stock and sold it next turn when it costed $18. but in the next turn it went up till $30. i could't really tell which on would rise or fall. so i din't think it was safe way. so the tip "you must spend money to make money" made me buy all of the morgan stock. but then you said not to pull all the eggs in one basket, so i sold one of the stock, and bought the railroad stock which all of the prices went up and i made lots of money. so i think "dont pull all your eggs in one basket" really helped me the most

yesterday when we made our own bears were like cottage farming. we only made one and didn't have to hurry. but today, when we were making the best bear, it was more of Factoty labor. we made a assembly line and there was a specialization of labors and thats what we did. and we had to really hurry up and be quick to be paid more. but when we were making in a hurry some people were making it really ugly which we would obly be paid 1/3. we did make alot more but we were all tired after making those bears.

As soon as you try to open the brown, wooden door, which leads to your room, you have a feeling that something is stuck behind the door. you push it harder and the door crack opens and the sight infront of you makes your mind messy. All the clothes you wore last week, lie on the floor like it is trying to make a pattern on a room floor. the desk has a tower made of stock of books, pens and pencils all over your desk and all the printed papers cover the whole desk. your bed sheets are the same as when you left the room. It was impossible to step further without stepping on something. you drag your feet to avoid breaking things with your feet.

Necessity is the mother of inventions, because when you make something, you make it because you need it or you want to do something in an easier way. For example, Alexander Graham Bell invented a phone so that people don’t have to travel miles to communicate. And also Wright brothers, Orville and Wilbur invented a plane. Nowadays almost everybody takes a flight to travel different countries. Henry Ford invented the first family motor cars and made everyone’s life easier to travel within the country. So the conclusion is that people start making or ‘inventing’ new things to make life easier.

I actually learn best in visual way. When we watch something or see something and write down notes when there are important stuff. and I also think I can learn good in Kinesthetic way, because when I try to make or do something, I do researches or go over in a book. and after that I know better and know things i might have missed. so in this class i dont really mind between learning visually or Kinesthetic.

Two highlights of the school in the 1st week of school were:
1. I had most of my classes with my friends.
2. I am in Scribbler class, which I didn't sign for it, but I think it is going to be fun.
My first impression on humanities was like i thought it was going to be tough, and hard, but so far, it was ok, and I could handle it.

my two goals for humanities this year is when I'm doing a socratic seminar, I would be able to share my thoughts and maybe discuss more with others. and other goal is to improve the grade on my vocab quizes.

My Gang

In my gang, there are mostly my friends like Joe, who is always, really funny, Declan, because he helps me on the homework, and Jonathan because we are in most of the classes together. Jug, who even though he left i still chat online with him and he is very funny. Do Hyun and Kang Heun we hang out sometimes, because we studied korean stuff together before. John beacuse hes always following me and talking to me and he is a pet of the gang. JoonSik because we played basketball together every saturday, and got friendly. Adi because he were in same math class and he worked together like everyday, and he is funny and makes me laugh. Sub, a.k.a Sebastien, we had P.E. and he hung out afterschool last year. i also have some gangs in 8th grade, like Yusaku, Koichito, because we played other sports together. i n 10th grade pretty much all the koreans becaue we know each other, and he play together and whenever we see each other, we like talk, and do something fun.
